MTBF Explained: Formula, Example and Limitations
Mean time between failures measures average operating time between repairable failures. It is useful for trends and comparison only when failure definitions and operating exposure are consistent.The MTBF formula
MTBF equals total operating time divided by the number of qualifying failures during the period. If three identical pumps collectively run for 6,000 hours and experience four failures, fleet MTBF is 1,500 operating hours.
Exclude planned shutdown time if the equipment was not exposed to failure, and document whether standby hours count.
Define failure before calculating
A bearing replacement, protective trip and minor leak may be recorded differently by different teams. Agree whether failure means loss of function, degraded function or any corrective intervention, then apply that rule consistently.
Use MTBF with context
A rising MTBF can indicate improving reliability, but averages can hide one bad actor or a changing production duty. Review the underlying failure modes, asset population and operating conditions.

No. It is an average, not a countdown for an individual asset.
